A thousand paper cranes.

In Kyoto, I came across this small old temple with eye-catching garlands of rainbow coloured paper cranes. I was told that traditionally, these were used to pray for the good health of loved ones. One was to pray as one folded each crane. When the cranes reached 1,000 pieces, you strung them up, brought them to the temple, prayed and then hung them there, possibly as a sign to the gods of your sincerity of your prayer.
